Carbon road bike vs carbon gravel bicycle: 6 main differences

At first glance, carbon road bicycles and carbon gravel bikes look very similar, with many similarities. There are six aspects that can distinguish the differences between the two models.

Tire

Carbon road bikes have smoother tires, as they spend most of their time on flat paved roads. Therefore, smooth tires can reduce rolling resistance and increase speed. To reduce weight, road bikes use narrower tires and typically have much smaller tire gaps than gravel bikes. Road racing carbon bikes are usually suitable for tires in the range of 23-28mm, while endurance road bikes can be suitable for tires 28-32mm wide.
A wider carbon gravel bicycle may be slower on asphalt roads, but it can replace the tires of road vehicles. Due to gaps, road bikes may not be able to install gravel bicycle tires. Moreover, it is highly likely that the gravel bike will be equipped with hydraulic front forks in the future.

Transmission

The gravel bike will use a single speed disc (there are also many 2x discs), and the flywheel has a larger range. This single disc gravel bicycle feels more like riding a mountain bike. The transmission system is relatively simple.

Geometry

Road carbon bikes: lower, more aerodynamic position, more flexible handling
Gravel carbon bike: upright, more comfortable position, more stable handling

Comfortablility

Carbon road bikes: prefer to rigidity and speed
Carbon gravel  bikes: focus on compliance and comfort

Weight

In the same frame, the carbon gravel bike is heavier than the road bike.

Components and accessories

Both use a drop type handlebar, and the handlebar of the carbon gravel bike extends outward at a greater angle. Many carbon gravel frames have additional mounting brackets on the frame for connecting bags, shelves, and fenders. Water bottle racks installed at the bottom of the upper and lower pipes are common on carbon gravel bicycles.

How to choose

It's easy to make choice just basis on your budget and needs, carbon gravel bikes are usually more expensive, but they are better suited for longer and more "unexpected" road conditions, while carbon road bikes are more suitable for driving on paved roads.
