Glossy painting surface is better than Matt paint finish for the carbon bike rim
Matt painting is very popular on various types of bicycles. There are many brands using matte paint on high-end carbon bikes, and now it has become common on entry-level models as well. The trend of matte finish on bicycles also reflects the trend of the automotive industry. In the automotive industry, the all black matte surface of Black Warrior can make ordinary cars look high-end and to some extent hide their evil nighttime activities. Of course, the aesthetic of color and surface treatment is entirely subjective, but in my opinion matt paint has several drawbacks making their application on carbon bicycles very poor.
First,difficult to clean
For those who enjoy cycling in winter or on muddy roads, cleaning their carbon bike after cycling will be an important part of their riding activities. There are many bicycle cleaning products that want to make cleaning bicycles easier, but glossy paint can usually be directly washed away with a high-pressure water gun to remove dirt, but matt paint is good at keeping these dirt. Although thorough wiping can also clean these dirt, there will be traces on the carbon bike wheel that cannot be eliminated, especially at the movable contact parts such as the pivot and central axle. Ordinary plastic brushes can also damage the paint surface, and even a gentle brush can leave permanent marks on expensive carbon bike rims. This is more pronounced on black or carbon fiber matte paint surfaces, where brushes mixed with mud can gradually turn your black painting white. If you pay great attention to bicycle cleaning, matte paint is not suitable for you. Even with the best maintenance, it will never restore the finish to its original factory condition.
Second, they will become glossy at last
The biggest enemy of matte paint is friction, even the slightest friction on the thighs, locked shoes, or accidentally, moore and more time, glossy patches will appear on the rubbed areas. It will ultimately make your carbon bicycle wheels look older than its actual age.Carbon bikes with glossy paint are less susceptible to damage in these areas.
Third,Difficult to repair
If you accidentally scratch the glossy paint carbon wheelset, you can purchase a touch up pen to repair it, and even wax can partially repair it. But repairing the matte wheel is very complex, and due to its dull optical properties, even if repainted, this area will look inconsistent with the rest of the old part. You can't even put stickers on that area to hide flaws, as most stickers won't stick to matte surfaces. Matt paint not only looks worse, but especially after a season of cycling, they are more difficult to maintain.
